Popups Gone Wild
(Spam without email...)
Have you ever
opened a messenger window and cursed a blue streak because some (explative
deleted) person has pasted their advertisement all over you screen?
I had this unpleasant surprise recently. It seems that one of the
sites I frequent on the web installed a spyware known as Show Behind
on my machine without permission. This is the same Show Behind that
recently got off the legal hook in a case where their spyware
overlaid competing advertisements on top of paid adds on a web site.
To make things worse, popup blocking software seems unable to block
Show Behind adds from popping up!
How do we eliminate this
evil and unwanted implantation of software on a machine? First, get Adaware.
It is a lovely program that you can get for free that will assist
you in finding spyware on your system. Run Adaware often as it does
not protect automatically. The second thing to do is (if you feel
safe doing so) go through your registry and remove anything with a
reference to "showbehind.exe". Third, find the file "showbehind.exe"
on your hard drive and delete it. Remove the directory "sbnet"
where it is found as well. This will free you from the evil spyware.
